Mohawk River Trail Safety Tips From Rome P.D.

Mohawk River Trail Safety Tips From Rome P.D.

With the growing popularity and use of the Mohawk River Trail in Rome, the Rome Police Department is providing safety tips for the walkers, joggers and bicyclists who plan on utilizing this new trail.

If parking your vehicle at a trail head, remember to lock your vehicle and place any valuables out of sight. Tell friends or family the route you will be taking, and always travel with a partner if possible. Carry identification and a cell phone if possible. Be aware of your surroundings and others around you. Pets should be kept on a short leash, and pet owners should clean up after their pets. Motorized vehicles such as automobiles, mopeds, ATV, etc... are prohibited on the trail. Bicyclists should use a bell or horn to announce their presence when approaching pedestrians and utilize head and tail lights for night time travel. Bicyclists should travel at a safe speed at all times. Those using headphones to listen to music should keep the volume at a level where you can still hear bike bells and warnings from other walkers and runners. Any trash that you create, please make sure it finds its way to a trash can. Although police have not received any reports of serious issues related to the trail system, the Rome Police Department does patrol, monitor and surveil the trail throughout the City of Rome.
